What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is not a precious metal such as platinum, gold, etc., but it is surely one of the most sophisticated construction materials used today.

Stainless steel is a high grade alloyed steel having an exceptional resistance to corroding substances.

Adding small quantities of chrome to the steel improves its resistance to the development of rust. The chrome reacts with oxygen and a chrome-enriched metal-oxide layer (passivating layer) is formed on the surface, protecting the metal from corrosive materials.

Minimum quantities of nickel improve the resistance to corrosion and give the steel an austenitic structure (inner structure). This inner structure again affects the physical and mechanical characteristics of the steel as well as its corrosion and welding quality.

On adding molybdenum the resistance can be extended to meet very aggressive conditions.

Not all stainless steels are equal. As with every other material, competence is necessary. Especially in pool construction, where oxidising substances such as chlorine are used, there is a great demand for professional know-how.

Because of the oxygen contained in air and water the passivating layer develops naturally. Stainless steel cannot rust on surface with undisturbed access to oxygen. To ensure that this happens, it is essential not only to choose the right material, but also the appropriate planning and processing procedures when using the material.
